The trains are running at thirty minute intervals during peak time. LOL… I got to the ticket office this morning and there was a single female who, although aware of the presence of customers wanting to buy tickets, continued to mosey around the office at her own pace. First she went to the safe to remove documents in a slow-motion kind of manner, then she turned to place the documents on a counter close to the window. She then moved closer to the window without any intention of providing a service and looked over at the complaining customers with enough disdain to drive us away, except we weren’t going to be driven away. She looked at us as if thinking, “what can I do next to irritate these idiots buying tickets?” She stood with her forefinger resting on her bottom lip, then decided to call someone. Surprisingly, the call was brief but as the customer before me handed her enough money for a monthly ticket, her answer was, “Sorry, my area manager isn’t in.”
Huh?
I had no idea what that meant, or how the absence of her area manager impacted on our buying tickets, so I advised the customer before me to buy a single ticket as it was clear that Metrorail staff were not fully present in mind, body and soul. Besides, it seemed that they might return to striking if all goes according to plan.
Now call me a pessimist if you like, but standing on the platform waiting for the next train, I got thinking, if we rounded up all the Chinese people in Cape Town, I’m sure they’d be able to drive a train competently, hop off the station to serve customers, clip our tickets on the platform, get back into the driver’s seat and get us all at our destinations on time. Perhaps they’d also be able to send money back home if they were employed at half the price. Who knows?
Just a thought, you know… Am I being nasty? I’d like your opinion.
