Who We Are
As the world moved rapidly towards an information society, it was critical for all citizens, in particular historically disadvantaged communities, to have access to the widest range of information and opinion in order to participate effectively in an increasingly integrated world.
And in 2002 an A4 community newsletter was initiated, called Bonteheuwel Community News. The newsletter distinguished itself through its content coverage by being positive, relevant and contributing towards the broader objectives of regenerating these areas as a safe place to live and giving the voiceless a voice to be heard and seen.
Despite the obvious limitations of the newsletter, it very quickly became an integral part of local readers. Â Since inception the newsletter was funded by a committed Bonteheuwel resident, who for personal reasons wants to remain anonymous.
In 2009 the name was changed The Cape Flats News, a name which appeals broadly to everyone living in Cape Town.
The newspaper is headed by a project director and supported by committed freelance reporters and a dedicated sales team. A strong management team is in place to oversee strategic direction and implementation.
At the moment, news and related office matters are being operated from a local school, Central Park Primary School, Bonteheuwel.
The newsroom is fully equipped with the latest technical resources, including computers, cameras, printers and internet. The challenges facing an independent newspaper of this stature is lack of advertising support from major corporates. The news team appeals for support of any kind.
